Hybrid Work:
This is a hybrid work position in Calgary, Alberta and requires in-person collaboration at the WestJet Campus (22 Aerial Place NE) 3 days per week. This provides flexibility the remaining 40 of the work week. This hybrid work plan allows for critically important learning, collaboration and networking with our colleagues. Specific days in the office are agreed upon by the team.
Reporting to the Manager – Commercial Accounting, this role is responsible for maintaining the accuracy and integrity of monthly accounting processes for the Enterprise portfolio. Working closely with business unit stakeholders and fellow WestJet Finance employees, the Enterprise Accountant is responsible for month end close activities, maintaining account reconciliation and journal entry controls for the Controllers Group.
Key deliverables include:
- Perform detailed accounting and reporting activities on a recurring basis to support an accurate period-end close, including:
- Posting monthly accruals and other journal entries, as required.
- Developing, completing, and refining balance sheet reconciliations and investigating any anomalies to expectation.
- Researching accounting issues and documenting accounting policies on a periodic basis.
- Preparing financial analysis on monthly and quarterly data.
- Ensure accounting and reporting processes comply with applicable internal control (C-SOX) requirements.
- Documentation of process narratives and related financial controls.
- Liaise with Financial Planning and Analysis (FP&A) to facilitate forecast preparation and monitoring.
- Identify and analyze possible improvements to processes and implement selected solutions.
- Prepared to work as a member of project teams, providing insightful analysis on accounting impacts.
- Be an active member of the accounting team; willing to mentor and coach peers, brainstorm issues, complete ad-hoc requests, and be flexible in completing any task.
Experience and qualifications:
- Completion of a post-secondary degree in Commerce or Business Administration, and completion of, or in the process of completing an Accounting Designation (e.g. CGA, CA, CMA).
- 3-5 years of progressive experience in an accounting or financial analysis role.
- Ability to analyze business results, identify and clearly summarize key issues.
- Positive attitude and enthusiasm to partner with a focus on providing useful information to make good business decisions in a supportive and friendly environment.
- Excel proficiency and a keen interest in learning new technology (Pivot tables, Access Databases, Cognos, or other BI tools).
- Attention to detail, organized and thorough, with a desire for continuous improvement.
- Ability to handle pressure and meet tight timelines in an environment with a high volume of activity.
- Possess strong communication skills to provide guidance &/or instruction to peers in the organization.
- Ability to maintain a high level of confidentiality.
- JDE experience would be an asset.
- Previous airline or transportation industry experience would be an asset.
