Role Summary
The Senior Tax Accountant is a subject matter expert in federal and state income taxes at Alaska Airlines and Horizon Air. This role exercises considerable judgment in projects associated with the preparation and maintenance of direct tax records.
Scope & Complexity
As an individual contributor, the Senior Tax Accountant makes decisions in direct federal and state income tax areas.
Key Duties
Acts as a subject matter expert in federal and state income taxes through detailed maintenance and preparation of direct taxes for the holding company and its subsidiaries. This may include:
Preparing state quarterly FIN 18 and annual ASC 740 calculations.
Maintaining the tax fixed assets system (BNA Fixed Assets), including report production.
Maintaining the income tax software system (OneSource Express RS).
Preparing VEBA tax return.
With minimal direction from leadership, exercises considerable judgement and makes recommendations to the team through detailed research and analysis. Examples include:
Consulting with subsidiary personnel with tax questions and problems.
Assisting with appeals, audits and litigation.
Keeping abreast of current tax laws, regulations and practices.
Makes recommendations to supervisors based on analysis of changes to state and federal income tax laws.
Guides, influences and coaches others in our tax process and filing positions.
Ensures accounting practices are in compliance with company policies.
Prepares and leads special tax projects, economic analysis and other projects.
Creates tax forecasts and projections, monthly journal entries and account reconciliations.
Provides tax and accounting support for Alaska Airlines Foundation.
Reviews and prepares responses to tax controversies, ensuring timely responses are provided for information requests.
Job-Specific Experience, Education & Skills
Required
3 years of direct tax experience in public accounting, or related area.
A Bachelor’s degree with a focus in accounting, or an additional 2 years of related training/experience in lieu of this degree.
Experience in corporate tax return workpaper and form preparation.
Detail oriented, self-motivated, organized and able to work efficiently and accurately under pressure to meet deadlines.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel (including pivot tables and v-lookups) and PowerPoint.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Minimum age of 18
Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
Preferred
2 years of federal and/or state income tax return preparation
ASC740 experience.
International tax experience.
Tax technology experience.
A Master’s degree in accounting or a business-related field.
A CPA, or progress toward a CPA.

Salary Range
$95,000 -- $142,600 / year
Salary Details
Pay will be based on multiple factors, including and not limited to location, relevant experience/level and skillset while balancing internal equity relative to other Alaska/Horizon employees. Alaska/Horizon is committed to fair, unbiased compensation along with competitive benefits in all locations in which we operate.
Note: We don’t typically hire at the top of the range.
