The Airway Transporation Systems Specialist (Automation) will be assigned to the Boston ARTCC AUTO SSC (WEP33-ZBW).
Duties
The Airway Transporation Systems Specialist (ATSS) at this level is recognized as the subject matter expert in their field. All duties of an ATSS are tied to maintaining safe and efficient operating capacity of the vast and complex network of electronics systems required for the worlds largest air traffic control and navigation system. ATSS personnel install, evaluate, maintain, modify and certify facilities, services and equipment that support the National Airspace System (NAS).
Serves as an ATSS (Automation), responsible for performing a variety of functions directly related to the operations of the NAS.
Performs work of broad scope and complexity with a high degree of independence. Has broad automated systems and networking responsibilities providing complete services to air traffic customers over a large geographic area.
The work performed at this level requires technical expertise on complex systems and/or emerging technology, systems interrelationships and management of the NAS. Provides the highest organizational level of technical support associated with analyzing, designing, developing, installing, repairing, fabricating, maintaining, modifying or evaluating the most complex systems for which the FAA is responsible.
Plans, coordinates and performs work with a high degree of independence, keeping the supervisor advised only of the most critical issues. Carries out work in accordance with overall plans and objectives of the organization, resolving problems as they arise and making adjustments as necessary to deal with unanticipated situations and organizational needs.
This work includes responsibility for evaluating diagnostic data from multiple systems that are integrated to support a network of services or service products.
Monitors other employees time as a project or team leader. Identifies requirements (staffing funds, materials and equipment) to accomplish projects and tracks the use of project resources. Provides training, mentoring, guidance and advice to FAA employees, contractors and other organizations as needed. Supervisor rarely reviews completed work. Acts in a security and administration role for automation system. Conducts day to day monitoring and management of system and user activity that affect information security, performs the day to day hands on operational and security duties, performs security administration performance checks, reviews/manages user accounts, files and directories, reviews and analyze audit logs, installs and reconfigures approved software and adaptations, performs user account management and follows all agency policy and guidance on the automation systems.
Contacts are both internal and external. Often represents the organization as the primary point of contact on projects, programs and other work activities to coordinate and implement plans or obtain information and resolve problems.
Position may be the second level support for NAS systems, SMO, or regional offices providing broad program expertise. Contacts are both Internal and external to the FAA. Represents the organization as primary technical point of contact on projects, programs, and other work activities to coordinate and implement plans or to obtain information and resolve problems.
Receives general program assignments from a supervisor or higher level manager. Assignments are stated in terms of priorities, overall objectives and boundaries. Completed assignments are considered technically authoritative and are reviewed only for general compliance with organizational objectives. Identifies resources needed to perform assignments. Organizes and assigns resources needed to accomplish large work activities within established schedules. Work is reviewed for compliance with established policies and sound technical and programmatic judgement.
