Applications Engineer Intern
Job Summary:
This position exists to support the growth of the Bal Seal Engineering (BSE) through the creation, refinement, and maintenance of BSE custom products (seals, springs, and contacts). This position is responsible for having basic understanding of customers applications and provide regular communication between Sales, New Product Development Engineering, and Operations to ensure the design, development and testing of all aspects of our components, including new and existing products, meet the customer application requirements. This position is focused on problem solving, process development, evaluating customer requirements and recommending changes to improve product and process performance. Candidates should have excellent communication skills, good problem-solving capabilities, and the ability to work well with the organization as a whole.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Establishes a close working relationship with the Application Engineering Team
- Works to identify potential process improvements and direct them in their needs for successful implementation of our product into their systems for performance needs
- Gain basic understanding of Application Engineering’s work to solve customers technical needs via innovative product/service solutions, including technical proposal generation, cost estimates and related fixturing, procedures and test methods
- Shadows Application Engineers as they engage with Prototype and Production to resolve problems that arise during and after implementation as well as participate in Material Review Board (MRB) for dispositioning Discrepant Material Reports (DMR) (Preferred)
- Evaluates current processes for Continuous Improvement (CI) areas to increase efficiency or ensure consistency and reliability of our teams’ deliverables, develops improvement plan, and works to implement changes supporting overall corporate annual CI savings goals (Preferred)
- Perform miscellaneous and non-standard duties as required. Such duties are diversified in nature and may be changed from time to time to suit the needs of the company
Education:
- Pursuit of BSME or equivalent technical degree. 3rd year preferred.
Experience:
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Able to communicate clearly in writing (e.g. email, memos, explanations, drawings) and explain work to supervisor and others in the group. Can work effectively with peers.
- Works within well-established practices and clearly defined scope of work and their work is reviewed at project milestones &/or on completion
- Strong Computer skills. Microsoft Office Suite is all heavily utilized programs at Bal Seal
- Interest in working with Continuous Improvement, Lean initiatives, developing and implementing processes
- Ability to operate in a deadline-driven, dynamic, fast paced environment
- Initiative to identify and solve problems with little direction or assistance
- Must be self-motivated and driven problem solver
- Utilization of CAD modeling software (SolidWorks and/or Inventor preferred) in accordance with Engineering and Manufacturing 3D modeling and drawing best practices
- Basic understanding of database needs and the value of well-maintained data
- Proficient with Finite Element Analysis (FEA) tools and interpretation of results (Preferred)
- Basic understanding of programming logic (Visual Basic, Python, Cold Fusion, etc.) and the ability to write macros for support in automating redundant tasks in Microsoft Office & SolidWorks (Preferred)
- Ability to adapt to various computer programs quickly and effectively, including shortcut keys, and typing speed of 40 WPM (Preferred)
Physical Requirements:
- This position is mainly sedentary; therefore, required to sit.
- Must be able to enter data into a computer by use of a keyboard and mouse and be able to sit for long periods at his/her desk as well as occasionally visit employees throughout the building to gather data and clarify information.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to walk.
