Position Summary
Were looking for a Controls / Automation Engineer to lead automation integration and expansion projects in Manhattan, KS. Using strong controls, project management and manufacturing experience, this person will work with both existing equipment and new capital investments to customize solutions for the business. This person will play an integral role in development of new technology by designing control systems that will be used across multiple sites in the division, becoming a subject matter expert for designing and troubleshooting the next generation of systems.
Ensures timely and efficient completion of detailed engineering project phases or major projects to achieve division cost and customer service objectives. Plans, schedules, and coordinates efforts of the engineering staff or acts as an individual researcher or functional expert on specific projects with significant customer and business impact.
Responsibilities
- Develops project goals and objectives to complete complex or major manufacturing engineering projects by reviewing project proposals and plans and conferring with management. Ensures that projects meets schedule, cost results, and technical expectations through effective project leadership.
- Applies and leads continuous improvement initiatives for manufacturing operations in critical and/or high impact areas of production.
- Assists with project schedule by studying project plan and specifications; calculating time requirements; sequencing project elements. Maintains project schedule by monitoring project progress, coordinating activities, and resolving problems.
- Controls project plan by reviewing design specifications, and plan or schedule changes, and recommending actions to achieve performance to committed milestones. Controls project costs by approving expenditures and administering contractor contracts.
- Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing trade and technical publications, benchspaning state-of-the-art practices, and/or participating in professional associations.
- Complies with federal, state, and local legal requirements (e.g. environmental, safety, etc.) by studying existing and new legislation, ensuring adherence to requirements, and advising management on needed actions.
- Recommends actions by analyzing and interpreting data and making comparative analyses. Analyzes proposed changes in methods and materials for cost and quality impacts.
- Acts as consultant to management on major matters. Establishes goals and objectives required to complete projects. Identifies mentoring needs. Trains and mentors less experienced employees. May provide leadership to others in department or to ad-hoc teams.
- Shares specialized knowledge with others; may serve as functional expert. Represents company on specific projects. Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
Qualifications
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Mechanical, Electrical and / or Manufacturing engineering field.
- Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the job typically acquired through eight or more years of increasingly responsible related experience.
- Comprehensive knowledge of manufacturing and production engineering theories, principles, practices, techniques and concepts and broad knowledge of other related engineering areas and general business operations.
- Familiarity with Allen Bradley equipment, drives, DeviceNet, etc.
- Working knowledge of RSLogix, RSLinx, Factory Talk and/or Codesys.
- Exposure to process analysis review and statistical process control. Ability to apply and integrate knowledge of other related engineering areas to own areas of expertise.
- Knowledge of legal and regulatory requirements related to manufacturing plants and safety.
- Ability to use standard business applications software and/or specialized data analysis tools.
- Ability to work effectively with CAD systems or other computer aided manufacturing systems.
- Ability to establish goals and objectives to complete projects.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret engineering drawings, technical policies and recommend changes to procedures; effectively communicate and present information to team members, team leaders, and top management; respond to significant inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
- Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
- Ability to effectively demonstrate team member competencies and participate in goal-setting, performance feedback, and self-development activities.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to sit. The employee frequently is required to use hands to operate a computer and is required to talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to stand and walk. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision. Also expected of the employee is regular attendance, the ability to work cooperatively and professionally with others and members of the public, and the ability to manage multiple tasks at once. The employee may be required to travel to vendors or customers including overnight trips.
