We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.

Joby Aviation is seeking a passionate manufacturing engineer to join our team with a focus in Electrical Systems Integration (ESI), taking prototype work to a manufacturing level and bringing together engineering, manufacturing, and integration. The engineer will be responsible for manufacturing definition of flight critical wire harness assemblies and electromechanical interconnection systems, as well as communicating those details to the manufacturing and integration teams. This individual must be highly organized and self-driven while possessing a deep understanding of manufacturability and quality control. This position is exciting and rewarding, as the engineer will promptly see their ideas grow from concept to creation due to the fast pace of Joby Aviation.

Responsibilities
  • Support the establishment of the assembly line processes and production setup for wire harness fabrication and assemblies.
  • Author and review manufacturing work instructions for electrical harness assemblies and installations.
  • Design and implement assembly tools (formboards, jigs, fixtures, etc.) required for effective manufacturing.
  • Assist with leading technicians during harness installations into the vehicle.
  • Problem solve, troubleshoot and/or recommend opportunities to improve internal production for wire harness assembly.
  • Investigate, research, recommend and implement new equipment purchases to support wire harness production.
  • Provide technical expertise and support related to manufacturing to wire harness production teams.
  • Ensure product quality and conformance to specifications and type design.
  • Prepare documentation for new manufacturing processes and engineering procedures for harness assemblies.
  • Recommend and implement Poke-Yoke (Mistake or Error Proofing) designs and methods.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert on equipment/tools, including maintenance, calibration cycles, and validation of test fixtures and test equipment.
  • Design test fixtures and future improvements using standard or automated tools.
  • Have knowledge of wire Harness & Schematic to create cables, routing etc.
  • Perform or coordinate with tooling vendors the maintenance or repair of equipment including purchasing appropriate supplies and materials.
Required
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering OR at least 8-10 yrs professional experience in industry.
  • Must have 8 to 10 years of experience in building wiring harnesses, creating assembly work instructions and technical illustrations, and assisting with production/process planning.
  • Experience developing special assembly tools to aid in manufacturing including, but not limited to:
  • Formboards
  • Jigs and Fixtures
  • Proficiency in at least one of the “tier one” CAD systems.
  • Experience with drawings and BOMs, Manufacturing Execution Systems, Engineering Change systems, and Quality systems.
  • Knowledgeable in industry drawing standards and specifications
  • Understand workmanship standards of IPC/WHMA-A-620 (Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies) and SAE AS50881 (Wiring, Aerospace Vehicle)
  • Hands on electrical or mechanical experience.
  • Shop floor experience on leading assembly lines
  • Knowledge of ergonomic tools used on assembly floor and the safety measures & precautions to be used.
  • Good communication and presentation skills
  • Possess strong organizational, analytical and communication skills with excellent attention to detail
Desired
  • Flexibility in dealing with a dynamic manufacturing environment, able to interact effectively with all levels within the company.
  • Proficiency with Catia/Enovia
  • Technical expertise working within ERP Systems.
  • Self-starter with ability to work independently or part of a team.
  • Product development and design experience.
  • Experience with prototype manufacturing in a professional environment
  • Experience working in a FAA certified production line.

Compensation at Joby is a combination of base pay and Restricted Stock Units (RSUs). The target hourly rate for this position is $108,700 - $144,900/yr.
