Serves as an Engineering Technician within the FAA Logistics Center, Products Services Group.

Duties

Performs highly specialized technical work associated with analyzing, designing, developing, installing, repairing, fabricating, maintaining, modifying, or evaluating the most complex systems for the FAA, Customs and Border Protections (CBP) or other government agencies. which the FAA is responsible. Applies broad experience and advanced technical knowledge of mechanical and/or electronic concepts and theories. Understands how assigned systems, components, and disciplines are integrated with other systems, components, and disciplines. Systems include free standing towers, guyed towers, equipment shelters and other unmanned structures and facilities.

Work is vital to the success of projects that are critical to the safe and continual operation of the NAS, and/or other government agency programs, such as CBP. Contacts are both internal FAA personnel and external, and this position is often considered a key technical point of contact for assigned systems, programs, and projects. Contacts are made to furnish technical guidance and advice, instruct other employees, share information, provide data, discuss the status of assignments, and coordinate the activities of contractors.

Works with new and existing technology and interacts with less experienced technicians to provide guidance and assist them with obtaining the skills necessary to install, integrate, maintain, and restore complicated systems. Responsible for performing all aspects of maintenance activities, accomplish assigned tasks, or projects to maintain system readiness. Crew lead for teams on projects, CONUS and OCONUS, and serves a project POC. Will provide on-the-job training to less experienced technicians, communicates effectively with management and team members, leads effectively in a team environment to meet mission requirements. Exercise sound judgment, and integrity, act in an ethical manner consistent with FAA code of conduct, adhere to FAA policies, and report any safety or personnel issues to management immediately.

Receives general work assignments from supervisor and/or team lead and identifies resources needed to perform projects or assignments. Uses own judgment, experience, and knowledge to solve problems and complete assignments. Responsible for planning, scheduling, organizing, and prioritizing workload to accomplish tasks and maintain a focus on organizational objectives. Requests and coordinates resources to accomplish assigned work/activities within established schedule. In some cases, this position may need to develop solutions, procedures, and/or work instructions based on previous knowledge or past experiences.

Work contributes to the activities of the organizational unit and supports activities that are critical to the safe and continual operation of assigned programs. Performs complex work assignments independently, receiving little or no technical guidance. Supervisor and/or team lead furnishes general instructions on the scope of work, time limitations, and priorities. Technical manuals, manufacturers’ instructions, FAA procedures, and other publications provide guidance for some assignments. Utilize schematics, wiring diagrams, and blueprints to troubleshoot and repair systems. Independently performs assignments. Completed work is reviewed to an extent consistent with the complexity of the assignment. May be required to travel for the purpose of obtaining and/or providing technical information for resolving various operational problems and corrective maintenance issues.

This position may require involvement with and access to classified materials involving other government agencies, i.e., Customs & Border Protection Law Enforcement systems, projects, programs, files, drawings and data. The applicant may be required to successfully complete a high-risk security level clearance (Background Investigation).

Qualifications

To qualify for this position at the FV-H (FG/GS-12) level, you must demonstrate in your application that you possess at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the FV-G (FG/GS-10/11) level. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE includes: Experience performing installations, maintenance, operation, and testing duties on complex projects or systems, e.g., replacement of system components or facility maintenance across a large geographical area i.e. the Continental United States (CONUS). Experience reviewing parts of project designs done by others, and written specifications to prevent any possible conflicts with design areas (structural, mechanical, basic electrical, etc.), specifications, or scheduling. Utilize schematics, wiring diagrams, and blueprints to troubleshoot and repair systems. Experience planning, scheduling, organizing, and prioritizing workload to accomplish tasks and maintain a focus on organizational objectives. Work with systems such as free standing towers, guyed towers, equipment shelters and other unmanned structures and facilities
