The Materials Engineer II will work as a critical part of the Additive Manufacturing team by serving as the technical lead for all chemical and metallurgical testing for additively manufactured (3D printed) metallic parts and materials. This role will develop standard processes and training for additive-related chemical, metallographic, and mechanical testing. This role will also be the primary lead for additive material data analytics to ensure reliable material properties are achieved from development stages through production.


What You Will Do
 

Laboratory Responsibilities

  • Technical lead for all testing within the additive value stream including:
    • Full quantitative chemical analysis test methods.
    • Oxygen/Nitrogen/Hydrogen content analysis for powdered metal
    • Powder Size Distribution (PSD) testing
    • Porosity and metallography
    • Tensile and torsion testing
    • Other testing as required
  • Create standard work and training for additive materials testing and metallography, including microstructure standards throughout various processing steps
  • Primary point of contact / statement of work (SOW) owner for internal and external lab testing.
  • Provide technical support of Metallography Lab Technicians.
  • Preventive maintenance and calibration oversight of laboratory equipment.
     

Additive Materials & Process Development Support

  • Primary lead for additive material data collection, data analytics & statistics
  • Collaboration with Materials Engineers throughout the organization related to additive manufacturing
     

Additive Production Support

  • Support investigations/RCCAs related to material related defects
  • Internal and external audit support for special processes and additive manufacturing
  • Special process and additive technique/schedule (setup) sheet approvals
     

What You Will Learn

  • Become a technical custodian for all additive material & powder specifications
  • Earn your Material Review Board (MRB) signatory authority for West Des Moines additive materials
  • Become a driver of continuous improvement materials testing initiatives
    • Improve efficiency, reduce costs, reduce testing frequency (when warranted)
    • Evaluate new testing methods and equipment to improve efficiency and reduce costs
  • Provide engineering change order support for additively manufactured products, and conventionally manufactured products as required.
     

Qualifications You Must Have

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 2 years of prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field or in absence of a degree, 6 years of relevant experience.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract ​.

Qualifications We Prefer

  • Experience with material testing and characterization
  • Degree in Materials Science and Engineering or equivalent
  • Experience with additive manufacturing
  • Experience presenting to management and customers
  • Experience with statistical analysis and associated tools (Minitab, etc.)

The salary range for this role is 64,000 USD - 128,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
