Job Description:
Pratt & Whitney is seeking a highly motivated individual to support the manufacturing maturation of Ceramic Matrix Composite (CMC) turbine components. CMCs are an enabling material that increases the temperature capability of jet engine components. Through successful development and application of these materials, P&W will deliver engines that are more fuel efficient, lighter weight and more durable for commercial and military applications.
- Support a 24/7 operation as required.
Key Responsibilities:
- Developing and managing processes for machining ceramic matrix composites. This includes fixture and tool design, machine programming, material removal process parameters, and part cleaning after machining for turbine component applications. Create and implement strategies for automation of the machining process.
- Identify & implement shop floor process optimization, control methods, and work instructions (including specifications, engineering changes, QAD/process control, and tooling definition/requirements).
- Lead the initiative to advance the CMC Manufacturing Readiness Level (MRL) and support hardware production for Technology Readiness Level (TRL) demonstration.
- Play an active role in the Integrated Product Team (IPT) process for CMC turbine components while working closely with manufacturing and IPTs to develop new processes, implement new designs, eliminate quality turn-backs, and reduce overall product costs.
- Lead the strategy for comprehensive data collection and analysis from this process that will support robust process development and understanding as part of the digital thread for CMCs. This includes establishing methods for data collection, data analysis and data visualization to enable Statistical Process Control (SPC).
- Establish metrics for the process including yield, cost, cycle time, capacity, safety, delivery etc. Monitor outcomes to identify and implement improvement opportunities.
- Provide focused & effective leadership in eliminating EH&S/Ergonomics/Human Factors risks and addressing quality issues as processes transition into production.
- Conduct root cause investigations as required and implement corrective actions.
- Training of engineers and technicians
- Monitor and improve OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) through implementation of Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) practices.
- Identify, investigate, and implement new technology to address business goals.
Basic Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree from ABET (Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology) in Physics, Manufacturing or STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, or Mathematics).
- 8+ years of Engineering experience, or 5+ years with an advanced degree.
- U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are authorized to access information under this program/contract.
- CAD/CAM experience, including complex surfaces.
- Hands-on Computer Numerical Control (CNC) mill/lathe experience
Preferred Qualifications:
- 5-axis mill experience a plus
- Ability to independently create all fixtures, tools, programs required to machine a part including operating the machine.
- Experience with polymer, metal, or ceramic matrix composites
- Experience with Statistical Process Control (SPC), Design of Experiments (DOE), and/or GD&T principles
- Working-knowledge of quality and process improvement tools such as Six Sigma and LEAN
- Ability to develop strong interpersonal relationships and exercise influence.
- Knowledge and effective practice of Environmental, Health and Safety requirements including knowledge and effective practice of aerospace quality practices like AS9100 and/or ISO9001.
What is my role type?
In addition to transforming the future of flight, we are also transforming how and where we work. We’ve introduced role types to help you understand how you will operate in our blended work environment. This role is:
- Onsite: Employees who are working in Onsite roles will work primarily onsite. This includes all production and maintenance workers, as they are essential to the development of our engines.
Candidates will learn more about role type and current site status throughout the recruiting process. For onsite and hybrid roles, commuting to and from the assigned site is the employee’s personal responsibility.
This requisition is eligible for an employee referral award. ALL eligibility requirements must be met to receive the referral award.
