The Aerojet Rocketdyne Business Segment of L3Harris is seeking a Senior Specialist, Materials & Process Engineer with non-metallic materials experience to support ongoing Engineering and Manufacturing Development programs, production programs and new product development. Desired experience with materials/materials systems is as follows: polymer matrix composites (epoxy and phenolic resin systems), ceramic matrix composites and polymeric materials, such as rubber and adhesives. This position will report to the Senior Manager, Materials and Process Engineering in Huntsville, AL.
Essential Functions:
- Under limited general supervision of the Materials and Process Engineering technical leadership team and/or Program Chief Engineer, apply knowledge of engineering and scientific principles to resolve materials related issues, utilize six sigma techniques, lean manufacturing process knowledge and sound decision-making principles to perform the following duties:
- Provide on-site support at L3Harris manufacturing facilities and supplier manufacturing facilities, as required, to assist in troubleshooting and problem solving production related issues.
- Collaborate with Design and Manufacturing Engineers to develop robust manufacturing processes for various solid rocket motor components
- Support design process by providing material selection recommendations, creating material specifications, reviewing design drawings, reviewing manufacturing planning, providing supplier technical support and supporting Engineering Review Boards, Process Change Boards, Failure Review Boards customer technical interchange meetings.
- Develop test plans in coordination with Design and Analysis disciplines and characterize non-metallic materials; analyze material properties and develop design allowables per industry standards; summarize material properties and design allowable methodology in a written report.
- Perform engineering analysis of non-conforming hardware including coordination of analysis for disposition of Material Review Board documents. Maintain interactions with customers on materials obsolescence. Conduct project progress reviews to ensure program control. Conduct failure analyses to determine root cause, document technical conclusions of failure investigations.
- Support Parts, Materials and Process (PMP) requirements from customers; complete and submit PMP documentation as required; support customer PMP Control Board meetings.

Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree and minimum 6 years of prior material process experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 4 years of prior material process experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 10 years of prior material process experience.
Preferred Additional Skills:
- Bachelor’s degree in Polymer Engineering, Polymer Science, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering is desired.
- Master’s degree in one of the above disciplines is preferred.
- Knowledge of chemical principles, thermodynamics, polymer chemistry, structure/property relationships, kinetics, and data analysis is essential.
- Experience with polymeric materials, statistical analysis, and instruments used to characterize properties of polymeric materials or their precursors is a plus.
