Located in Northern California, the team at Joby Aviation is driven by our goal of creating an affordable, all-electric air transportation system. Imagine a piloted air taxi that takes off vertically, then quietly carries you and your fellow passengers over the congested city streets below, enabling you to spend more time with the people and places that matter most.Since 2009, our team has worked steadily to make this dream a reality. We’ve designed and tested many generations of prototype aircraft capable of serving in a network of electric air taxis. We’re looking for talented, committed individuals to join our team as we push onwards toward certifying the Joby aircraft with the Federal Aviation Administration, scaling our manufacturing, and preparing to launch commercial service in 2025.
Joby Aviation seeks a highly organized, passionate individual to join our test team to aid in the development of test systems to validate flight hardware and aircraft systems. As part of this team, you play a critical role in developing the test systems required to perform structural, environmental, and functional tests on safety-critical flight hardware and their corresponding systems for vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) electric aircraft. The data collected from these systems during testing will inform the company’s hardware design teams and pave the way to production-ready hardware and aircraft certification. The Joby Aviation team is made up of extremely talented, hardworking, proactive, and hands-on individuals, operating in a very fast-paced and rewarding environment. We are looking to expand this team with like-minded individuals looking to make a mark in the transportation industry.
Responsibilities
- Use open-source, commercial off-the-shelf (COTS), or proprietary testing tools or frameworks to develop hardware in the loop (HIL) test systems for software, mechanical, electrical and energy-component testing/validation of aircraft line replaceable units (LRUs), sub-systems and full aircraft system(s).
- Work closely with the aircraft design team(s) to develop the test system requirements and to capture the nuances of the aircraft components, subsystem architectures, and operational environment.
- Design systems from first principles capable of testing aircraft LRUs/Systems such that it replicates the loads/environment sustained during nominal missions and up to the extreme limit/ultimate testing scenarios of the hardware.
- Create and manage formal test system documentation (design analysis, mechanical/electrical drawing packages, bill of materials (BOMs) and assembly instructions, etc.) of the systems design to provide revision artifacts and to track system configuration.
- Build and integrate the system per the formal documentation and track all changes made through the whole system life cycle (track revision history, update when required).
- Assist the Test Engineering team to draft formal test procedures, instrumentation guidelines, test fixture designs, software user interfaces (UIs) and any other necessary tools to allow for representative testing of hardware per the defined requirements and flight profiles.
- Support the structural, environmental, and functional tests on specific hardware to validate LRU/System design and manufacturing against the aircrafts design specifications.
- Prepare, support, and guide the work of Test Engineers, Assembly and Test Technicians supporting your development activities.
- Take ownership of an assigned project and see it through the whole project life-cycle with an on-time completion.
Required
- B.S & 4+ years experience or M.S & 3+ years experience or equivalent relevant experience.
- Excellent problem solving skills with a strong analytical background and with a hands-on approach.
- Experience developing HIL test systems.
- Experience with data acquisition and control systems (LabVIEW, Veristand, SpeedGoat, dSPACE, Beckhoff, etc...)
- Proficiency in analytical, data analysis and/or model based system engineering (MBSE) design tools.
- Experience with mechanical design, computer-aided design (CAD) software and manufacturing drawing creation.
- Proficiency in a laboratory environment with knowledge of common instrumentation such as oscilloscopes, multimeters, programmable power supplies, signal generators, etc...
- Strong communication and social skills. The ability to work with many different people and manage working relationships.
Desired
- M.S./Ph.D. in relevant discipline.
- 6+ years of work experience in relevant industry.
- Experience with the design of electro-mechanical and/or hydro-mechanical system design and development (linear and rotational).
- Experience in the analysis and development of liquid thermal control loops (heating/cooling).
- Experience with high-voltage and industrial electronics.
- Experience with Dassault Systemes CAD; specifically using Generative Shape Design, Part Design, and Assembly Design.
- Proficiency in MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, and Python.
- Experience with aircraft certification (DO-160, DO-178B, and DO-178C), regulatory requirements, compliance testing, aircraft software engineering processes, and test verification.
- Requirement management (Polarion, DOORs, etc.), traceability and test case documentation experienced a plus.
- Hands-on machine shop skills using lathe, mill, welder, and other machine shop equipment.
- General aviation, aircraft homebuilding, or rapid prototyping experience is a plus.
