Overview
The Material Planner is responsible for planning, scheduling, releasing, and tracking of workflow from order placement to customer shipment in order to keep production running smoothly. The Material Planner is expected to utilize system tools to ensure that the supply chain is effective in meeting the needs of our customers while maintaining required delivery and inventory goals. This position is also responsible to support the facility safety, quality and cost objectives. The planner has a significant impact on customer satisfaction and shop floor activity and therefore must be a creative thinker with sound decision making ability that acts with the customer and business objectives in mind.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Create and release jobs for independent and dependent customer demand utilizing material requirements planning (MRP) processes and other strategic processes to satisfy customer demand, desired stocking levels, and maintain flow of work on the factory floor.
- Plan and monitor inventory levels and planning parameters to avoid shortages and excess manufactured and purchased parts.
- Shortage identification, management, and mitigation, which involve working closely with the procurement organization on strategies that reduce shortages, yet maintain inventory and cost objectives, along with strategies to help reduce excess inventory.
- Excess inventory identification and mitigation.
- Communicate and coordinate with production supervisors, and purchasing to receive buy in to build plans and to ensure schedule adherence and recovery if required.
- Participate and analyze production readiness reviews for production ramp ups, slow downs, and customer terminations.
- Manages the planning and coordination of resources to ensure production schedule commitments are completed by established deadlines.
- Perform diversified analytical duties related to the identification and resolution of materiel management problems to meet program schedules.
- Manage level loading of manufactured and procured parts.
- Maintain continuous status of orders in Production, Stock Rooms, Receiving and Shipping and expedite orders as required to maintain workflow.
- Initiate and participate in continuous improvement activities related to production planning, factory floor thru put and inventory management. Participate as required in problem solving teams, kaizen events, cross functional committees, and multi-discipline initiatives.
- Review and maintain MRP planning parameters and work with appropriate departments to correct data that is impacting supply/demand.
- Participate in reviewing new customer orders to acknowledge requested dates can be met, and supply alternate promise dates if required.
- Inform management of impacts to SIOP (Sales, Inventory, and Operations Planning) and assist in the implementation of both short and long term solutions, and identify opportunities in order to mitigate risks.
- Perform planning functions required to achieve the timely and successful launch of new products and production increase requests.
- Expedite work flow and coordinate changes in schedule.
- Attend meetings and report status as required.
- Performs other related functions as required to achieve department, site and corporate objectives.
Qualifications
- Three or more years of experience in planning or supply chain roles, related to inventory management.
- Advanced working knowledge of production planning principles and application in both made to order and made to stock environments.
- Proficient and comfortable working with MRP/ERP Systems.
- Manufacturing experience required, aerospace preferred.
- Broad knowledge of a general technical field such as mechanical engineering, behavioral science, finance, supply chain, or business administration involving the use of a broad theoretical knowledge.
- APICS Certification preferred.
