Position Summary:

The Material Science/Metallurgist intern (co-op) will support Quality, Manufacturing, and the Metallurgical Laboratory. Establish controls on raw material purchases and for laboratory testing to customer and industry requirements. Job assignments will be related to your functional engineering discipline; typically mechanical, industrial or materials science engineering. You will be responsible for accomplishing performance goals and will receive progressive responsibility in process and/or product engineering.

The co-op/intern will be tasked with various short/long term projects to gather and analyze data required for efficient design/processing of forgings. Intern will be exposed to manufacturing environment, estimating of forging processes, manufacturing process planning, heat treatment, etc.

and Essential Functions:

  • Apply principles that he or she has learned in school to hands-on situations, materials characterization and metallurgical analysis.
  • Identify and recommend process improvements for specified projects.
  • Attend meetings, training sessions, symposiums and other appropriate educational opportunities.
  • Perform or review systems analysis, testing and documentation for existing processes.
  • Participate on project teams for assigned projects; analyze improvements and new product or applications and develop requirements and specifications with team.
  • Work within specifications provided to meet project goals and objectives in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Participate with peers, project team members and other departments on new product development, product line extensions and product enhancements.
  • Support Quality and Manufacturing processes.
  • Assist with reviewing specifications for raw material purchases.
  • Assist with manufacturing Process Control.
  • Assist Metallurgist with communication to suppliers to improve Metallurgical and quality performance.
  • Assist with determining root cause for product test failures and customer issues.
  • Help maintain specification data base for product testing requirements
  • Assist with conducting internal and external process audits, as required.
  • Obtain and analyze test data to support capability analysis and process improvement initiatives. Documents results of investigations and studies.
  • Assist with the planning of production routing.
  • Assist with the purchasing of supplies for the forge shop.
  • Support zero defect and pipeline projects to help improve productivity or reduce variable cost.
  • Track projects to determine success or failure and the potential impact.

Job Qualifications:

  • Minimum second year students working towards Bachelor Degree in Metallurgical/Materials Engineering/Chemical Engineering or equivalent.
  • A strong technical aptitude along with the ability to work independently, yet interact closely with other departments, customers, and vendors.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel and Word); Oracle a plus.
  • Excellent verbal, written and computer skills required as well as mathematical, analytical, problem solving and organizations skills. Programming is not required but is a plus.

For informational purposes only, the range of pay for this role is $19.25 to $24.25 US Dollar (USD) Hourly based on a variety of factors. Employees will receive 0 hours paid time off every year.
