Position Summary

 

Magellan Aerospace, Middletown, Inc. has an exciting opportunity for a reliable and hard-working Brazing Mechanic.  As a key member of our manufacturing team, the successful individual will possess experience in lay ups of various brazing and brazed honeycomb assemblies for high temperature applications in the Aerospace Market. 

 

Essential Responsibilities

 

  • Sets up and operates any equipment and tooling in the brazing areas.
  • Performs brazing of assemblies or installation of sheet metal and honeycomb parts to assemblies.
  • Works to blueprint and blueprint requirements to build complicated brazed assemblies, checking tooling when parts are not to blueprint.  Reports problems to supervisor.
  • Checks Shop Order for sequence of operations, blueprint dimensions and ascertains that all operations necessary to make blueprint parts are on Shop Order.
  • Remains alert to any mismatch in the core. Checks for gaps between the core after connecting the core.
  • Sets up spot and seam welders for certification and production runs; assists in certification of equipment; ensures material combinations, according to government and contractual specifications.
  • Performs repairs on rework on any parts, sub-assemblies, cores, or final assemblies.  Works on any component part of a major assembly as needed.
  • Submits test panels to process laboratory for necessary testing.  Works with various thicknesses of steel, alloy and other metal parts.
  • Applies braze alloy to face sheets, edge members, and core to face assemblies by spraying on binder and braze alloy, using conventional spray equipment and electrostatic spray apparatus by performing the following activities:
  • Carefully mixes binder and inhibitors, performs binder and alloy application using extreme care to attain uniformity
  • Carefully weighs parts before and after alloy application and records on Shop Order and in log books.  Weight must be in grams.
  • Sets up parts in proper position and adjusts spray gun for proper air pressure and fan consistent with applicable specs and Manufacturing Technical Directive (MTD).  Maintains spray equipment in proper working order.
  • Maintains log for batch numbers, units sprayed, and weight.
  • Uses a variety of sheet metal operations and assembly including:
  • Tack welding
  • Loads preset jig with parts or sub-assemblies and core
  • Files, cuts, fits, burrs, tack welds, or otherwise fastens pieces of sub-assemblies into properly related positions
  • Pre-fits and clamps parts and pieces in proper relationship while being tack welded or otherwise assembled into a completed unit
  • Must have knowledge to adjust portable tack welders to required temperature settings dependent upon type of material and thickness.
  • Capability to trim and route
  • People working in the Core Room will also be required to:
  • Build honeycomb core used in new and prototype core assemblies, following the established sequence of operation.  Set up and maintain core making machines.
  • Make new and prototype core assemblies following the process sequence.
  • Build/assemble core blankets for layup in the production of plugs and nozzles.  Perform timesaving and honing of core to reach a certain measurement.
  • Basic housekeeping to clean up the area from the work performed and to maintain the housekeeping in the area using the proper conventional utensils (brooms, dusters, wet/dry rags, wet/dry vacuums), but excluding the use of mops and automatic floor scrubbers (i.e. Tennant floor scrubber). Maintaining the area includes material, parts, machines, tools and work tables used in manufacturing as well as objects used to store or stage items used in manufacturing.

 

Position Requirements

 

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
  • Blue Print Reading, Use of Precision Measuring Instruments, and Use of various hand tools
  • Thorough knowledge of metal, honeycomb braze, and materials
  • Use of optical instruments in evaluating quality of weld, depth of penetration, and weld slag size in the spot welding process
  • Use of standard mechanics tools including all types of stationary or portable machines and equipment
  • Possess a thorough knowledge of the core assemblies and the tack welding process
  • Tack, Honing, and Spot Welding Techniques
  • Manufacturing Technical Directives; Shop Orders and Rework Orders; MRB Disposition tickets; Complies with all engineering and customer specification requirements; and Magellan Aerospace Quality Instructions or other Magellan Aerospace Directives.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, auditors, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms.  The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee is occasionally required to walk, sit, climb or balance, talk or hear.  he employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly exposed to fumes or airborne particles and toxic or caustic chemicals. The employee is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, moving mechanical parts, and vibration.  The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme cold, extreme heat, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually very loud.
