The Open Communications Systems (OCS) organization is seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to join a highly accomplished team. In this position, the candidate will be responsible for developing technical solutions to a wide range of complex problems related to the entire product life cycle, including proposal, design, manufacture, integration, and test of various types of electronic chassis and module assemblies. Familiarity with CREO/ProEngineer or a similar CAD tool, knowledge of GD&T drawing standards, and experience with finite element thermal and structural analysis is strongly recommended. The candidate will work with minimal direction or supervision while exercising considerable latitude in determining the technical objectives of the assignment.
This position requires onsite presence in Fort Wayne, IN. U.S. Citizenship status is required as this position will require the ability to access U.S. only data systems.
What you will do:
Design, documentation, implementation, integration, and test of mechanical hardware for system design.
Solve complex technical problems that require the regular use of ingenuity and creativity while applying sound technical judgment.
Conduct thermal and structural analysis utilizing hand calculations and industry standard tools.
Conduct and participate in internal and external peer reviews, technical meetings, and program meetings.
Provide support to testing, subcontractors, and the factory.
Ensure the consistent application of mechanical engineering best practices and follow common standards in accordance with RTX processes.
Execute as part of a small team during product development, drawing generation, drawing release, and drawing change incorporation.
Actively work with Program Management, Systems Engineering, Supply Chain, Customers, and other disciplines to develop and manage objectives and requirements for hardware pursuits and projects.
Manage to cost and schedule requirements of assigned tasks.
Ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a diverse team.
Leverage new technologies, methodologies, tools, and processes used in industry to optimize hardware development, integration, and test efficiencies.
Qualifications You Must Have:
Typically requires 8 years of experience in mechanical engineering design, analysis, and/or manufacturing engineering for military, aerospace, or related applications.
Proficiency with CREO/ProEngineer or similar CAD tool.
Must have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Word, Excel, Powerpoint).
Ability to read detailed engineering drawings, specifications, and basic understanding of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing.
Excellent communicator with the ability to explain complex mechanical systems clearly in simple terms to mixed audiences.
Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) unless prohibited by local laws/regulations and minimum 10 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 7 years of experience or in absence of a degree, 14 years of relevant experience
The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
Qualifications We Prefer:
Active/current security clearance
Knowledge in the design of products and tooling used in applications requiring high reliability and extended life.
Experience in developing detailed mechanical designs and documentation packages for electrical and mechanical systems.
Experience in mechanical systems packaging, materials, thermal, and structural analysis.
Experience with a gate release process for product development.
Experience with the full product development cycle through Engineering and Manufacturing Development phases.
Experience in mechanical design and development of multi-layer digital, analog, and RF circuit card assemblies.
Experience in interconnect design techniques between components, modules, chassis, and subsystems.
Experience in cooling techniques for circuit cards and chassis.
Experience in a product data management environment such as PTC Windchill or similar.
Experience in design support for Special Test Equipment and tooling required for IV&V and production efforts.
Professional exposure to EVMS or similar cost and schedule tracking system.
Knowledgeable in quality management systems such as ISO 9001 and AS9100.
Experience as a Mechanical Lead Design Engineer, Hardware Lead Design Engineer, or Integrated Product Team Lead.
Experience in proposal and cost estimation support of Hardware pursuits.
M.S. or Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Mathematics, or other related STEM discipline.

The salary range for this role is 118,000 USD - 246,000 USD. The salary range provided is a good faith estimate representative of all experience levels. RTX considers several factors when extending an offer, including but not limited to, the role, function and associated responsibilities, a candidate’s work experience, location, education/training, and key skills.
