Classification Description
Designs, welds, heat-treats, fabricates, and machines precision tools, components, and assemblies for aircraft and related Support Equipment (SE). Advises about metals machining and welding and designs, manufactures, or modifies special precision tools, gauges, dies, and fixtures to facilitate metal-working operations. Performs metals technology shop calculations, such as determining cutting speeds and settings, welding processes, and preheat and post-heat requirements. Welds, brazes, solders, and heat-treats metals. Uses manual and Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) metal-working machines, mills, and lathes to manufacture and repair cams, gears, slots, and keyways for aircraft components and SE. Writes programs for CNC machines using Computer-Aided Design–Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAD-CAM). Required to perform assigned tasks within your work center that directly supports necessary functions of this job classification.
Specialty Qualifications
a. Knowledge. Knowledge of metal repair and fabrication processes and the composition of metals and machinability of materials is mandatory. Knowledge of weld specifications, metal tempering, forging, mechanical drawings and the use of precision measuring devices and tools is mandatory. Knowledge of metal fabricating by oxyacetylene, metallic arc, inert gas-shielded arc, operation and capacity of metal-working and welding equipment is mandatory. Knowledge of hazardous rays and fumes and the proper handling, use, and disposal of hazardous waste and materials is mandatory. Knowledge of MIS (CAMS/IMDS) and desktop computer operations and use is mandatory. Must have working knowledge of Air Force supply procedures to look up, place orders, receive and maintain parts and materials to complete assigned work.
b. Education. Completion of high school with courses in shop mathematics and metal working or mechanical drawing is desirable. Completion of an advanced metals technology course is mandatory.
c. Experience. Qualification as Welder, Technician is mandatory. Experience performing functions, such as gas or electric welding, boring, milling, boring, shaping, and grinding metal to fine tolerances and using precision measuring devices, is mandatory.
Special Certifications and Qualifications required for position
Must have a minimum of four (4) years documented experience, within the last ten (10) years, on C-130 aircraft. Must be able to meet and maintain Eglin welder certification requirements. SECRET security Clearance Required.
