PURPOSE:

Operate all types of welding and associated equipment for fabrication, repair and construction. Perform welding, burning, brazing, cutting and other related operations for all departments in the plant. Must identify, catalog, fabricate, repair, inspect, test and tag all lifting fixtures (i.e. Chains, wire and/or web/rope slings, forge tongs, die lift pins and chain hoists in Grafton and Worcester).

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Receive job assignments from foreman. Determine equipment, materials, dimensions, design and processes required with assistance of foreman when needed.
  • Operate electric arc, acetylene, heliarc, CO2, radiographs, welding positioners and automatic and semi-automatic welding equipment to cut, burn, build up and weld, solder and braze metals. Operate press and bending brakes, shears cutting machines, metal-cutting saws, grinders and drills to cut, bend and shape metals. Operate Plasma manual and automatic machines, BuggO units A-B-C, MuggO and Circo units. Operate mini Manipulator-Cayuga manipulator with rotary tables for all types of burning and welding. Operate Servograph “C” and “N”, trace template and burn to process sheet as required. Set up and operate arc air torch. Set up and operate oxy-lance for special pierce operation.
  • Fabricate parts, tools and equipment such as tongs, crane booms, baskets, racks, guard rails, machine guards, water tanks, ladders, jitney forks and special tools. May recommend changes in design, materials and specifications based upon knowledge and application of the job.
  • Repair tools, machine parts, trimming tools, gears, bearings, bushings, jitney forks, mufflers, guards, racks, conveyors, tanks, booms, furnace structural work and doors, pipe lines, steam coils, punches, ring roll parts, etc. anywhere in the plant or grounds. Weld on large forging presses, performing such duties as burning off nuts, repairing press base, cylinders and piping. May work on, underneath or on top of presses, often in tight and awkward positions.
  • Weld on construction projects such as buildings, facilities, furnaces and presses.
  • Weld on dies, including heating die and building up to specified dimensions, setting die on welding positioner, and welding extensions, locks and building up impressions, cutting edge, flash lines, etc. Occasionally weld hot dies in the presses. Burn flash from hot and cold forgings, can weld various forgings and repair forgings as required.
  • Torch cut various shapes of trimming plates, punches and chairs. May torch cut to remove forgings from die impressions. Silver solder carboloy cutting blanks to many types and shapes of holders.
  • Operate handling equipment to lift, transport and place welding materials and equipment and material to be welded.
  • Maintain work areas and equipment in a neat and orderly condition.
  • Perform other welding and maintenance duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE AND TRAINING:

Requires good mechanical background and aptitude and use of measuring and hand tools. Requires familiarity with inspection procedures. Requires 2 years of on-the-job training as Welder 2 or equivalent. Must be able to operate all types of welding and burning equipment and all machines related to metal fabrication. Must know shop math, read blue prints, have a good knowledge of characteristics of metals and proper welding materials to use. Must be able to pass government certification tests.

SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Requires considerable judgment in planning and performing work where only general instructions have been given or methods established. May recommend changes in design or specifications of parts, tools and equipment based upon his knowledge and the application of the job.
  • Frequent use of many first-class skills to perform welding operations in all positions, often in tight and awkward places. Must weld and fabricate parts to specified dimensions, requiring good coordination and deft touch.
  • Considerable care required when welding forgings and burning flash, test pieces, billets, to prevent damage to the product where the loss value would be large.
  • Must exercise care in operation of welding equipment to prevent damage where replacement or repair costs would be significant.
  • Must exercise care when performing work on dies or forgings to avoid downtime and non-productive time for others where the value of wasted time would be significant.
  • Constant care and attention required when operating welding, burning equipment, overhead cranes, booms, driving jitneys, Clarktor. Care in handling compressed gases.
  • Frequent heavy work required when obtaining stock or setting in place for welding and burning operations. Sustained high level of stamina and close visual attention required.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND POSSIBLE HAZARDS:

  • Stands most of the time, often bent over or in awkward positions. Must wear hot, heavy and restrictive protective clothing and helmet. Frequent handling of materials in all operations.
  • Constant exposure to unpleasant conditions, arc rays, heat, cold, dust, fumes and dirt. Must be able to work inside of vessels or on top of cranes, crane beams and underneath presses. Must wear large variety of safety equipment to perform job. Subject to high heats from dies and forgings, work anywhere in plant or outside plant.
  • Frequent exposure to injuries that are temporarily disabling. Contact with hot sparks, fumes, hot metal and sparks from grinder when performing welding, arc air and burning operations. Handles flammable gases and oxy cylinders. Occasionally works on crane rails, presses and in other hazardous places. Frequently inhales smoke and fumes. Subject to excessive noise.
