The role for the GE Licensing Director, Electrical Systems, is responsible for developing and reducing to practice electrical system topologies of advanced technologies for Licensing applications. In this role you will be working with research professionals inside and outside GE, potential licensees, standards development organizations, peer companies in the value chain for key Licensing technologies, and a cross-functional Licensing team of business leaders, patent and transactional attorneys and financial leaders to develop state-of-the art electronics with the goal of architecting advanced electrical systems for consumer and industrial electronics. The GE Licensing Director, Electrical Systems, will develop and patent technologies related, but not limited to, mobile electronics, TVs, PCs, AR/VR equipment, automotive and associated peripherals. Some technology areas include wireless power transfer for consumer electronics and appliances, & wireless electric vehicle charging.
At GE Licensing, the engineers are focused and challenged on developing new technologies and delivering state of the art prototypes – which will provide GE Licensing a strong opportunity to patent new inventions and interact at the leadership level with standards development organizations that may include WPC, 3GPP, and JVET. The Director, Electrical Systems – Licensing, is focused on design, simulation, reduction to practice, and development of intellectual property for electrical applications from mW to kW. The role is commercially focused, with strong alignment with finance, legal and business functions. The Director, Electrical Systems – Licensing, will grow their capabilities across many technical and commercial areas, while interacting with a wide range of outside organizations. The Electrical Engineer will continue to build the Licensing Electronics Lab capability, driven by Safety, Quality, and Lean considerations. The Director, Electrical Systems – Licensing, will be able to write clear interface control documents and specifications in order to have elements of a design outsourced as needed to meet tight timelines.
GE Licensing has invested heavily in internally-developed and externally-purchased IP assets for many years, and plans to expand this activity going forward. Licensing continues to expand its IP development work across multiple technical areas. Emphasis will be on growth of new capabilities and partnering across the value chain to progress a wide range of technologies. The internal ability to rapidly prototype, test and interoperate technologies is critical for the continued growth of GE Licensing.
The role of Director, Electrical Systems – Licensing, will bring direct financial and strategic value to GE. The role will lead in building a culture of integrity, while pushing business boundaries & inventing in a business- and IP-driven environment.
- Shape and drive roadmaps, strategy, development, and execution of electrical systems R&D with a focus on the transition of technologies from concepts to products and/or services for licensing. This requires both leadership in new technology areas as well as partnering with other leaders in relevant disciplines.
- Partner closely with technologists spanning multiple technology domains within and outside GE Aerospace Research.
- Lead technical reviews of key programs to ensure the right technical approach and rigor are being delivered to our customers.
- Take a strategic role in shaping the organization competencies and technical leadership in Electrical Systems and associated component technology areas and work closely Commercial teams in Licensing for successful go to market strategy.
Qualifications/Requirements
- PhD degree from an accredited university or college in Electrical Engineering, Power Electronics, Electrical Systems Engineering or similar (or MS degree + 5 years working)
- Minimum 10 years’ additional professional work experience in related field
- Experience in developing testbeds for technologies, and testing against existing or emerging standards
- Development of prototype system designs, based on a wide range of inputs.
- Development/review of electrical system designs and prototypes. Leverage feedback from team to drive testbed evolution.
- Review and implement all associated safety requirements
- Work with various suppliers of electrical components and software tools
- Capture & document lessons learned and best practices and related know-how and trade secrets
- Develop working knowledge of competing architectures and what differentiates them in the market. Limited reverse engineering experience
- Being innovative, excited by new ways to improve designs and challenge current ways of working. Change oriented – actively generates process and design improvements; champions and drives change initiatives; confronts obstacles
- Willing to present solutions in front of peer organizations internally and at SDO meetings in a very simple, clear manner

Desired Characteristics
- PhD in electrical engineering, Power Electronics engineering, Electrical Systems Engineering or similar, with 10+ years experience
- 2 years’ experience in Wireless Power Transfer Technology
- Experience developing and prototyping new technology in a rapidly moving business environment
- In depth experience owning and leading electrical design activity, including electrical interfaces between sensors, effectors and control units;
- Interested in technology development and products related Standard Essential Technologies and develop strategic patent portfolios though innovations.
- Ability to navigate ambiguity and work with minimal supervision in a fast-changing environment
- Compelling communication (in oral and written form) with the ability to simplify complex matters to the critical few elements for presentation to peers
