Northrop Grumman Defense Systems sector is seeking an Operating Unit (OU) Director for our Advanced Weapons (AW) Business Unit (BU) headquartered in Northridge, CA.  The OU Director will be responsible for full oversight of the Advanced Programs Operating Unit with oversight responsibility for the execution of a portfolio of programs and leading an organization that drives BU growth. This position reports to the Business Unit Vice President. The Advanced Weapons Business Unit is growing rapidly because of our long-term strategic plan, technology investments, capital investments and our focus and commitment to execution excellence. The Advanced Weapons BU designs, develops, and manufactures tactical missiles for the DoD and US allied partners.

The OU Director will be responsible for leading an operating unit of diverse programs primarily in the development phase of the program lifecycle with a focus on engineering excellence, execution excellence including cost, schedule, technical performance, and future growth. Execution activities include proposals, program planning, development, testing and manufacture of products for test and platform integration.  Specific programs within the OU include the Stand-in Attack Weapon (SiAW) program, block upgrades to the Advanced Anti-radiation Guided Missile – Extended Range (AARGM-ER), contract R&D programs, and multiple independent R&D projects.

A successful candidate in this role will:

  • Provide profit and loss leadership of an operating unit with multiple diverse development programs such as the $705M FFP development of Stand in Attack Weapon (SiAW) to small IRAD projects.

  • Lead a diverse team of functional and program direct reports in developing and executing the vision and business strategy to achieve and exceed growth and overall financial objectives.

  • Develop trusted partnerships with key customers.

  • Demonstrate a sense of urgency, ownership of tasks, and accountability.

  • Provide leadership to geographically separated teams.

  • Provide leadership to resolve complex technical challenges.

  • Develop strategies to add and retain current and future key talent.

  • Excel at organization and navigating ambiguity to drive clarity and inform and unite others.

  • Recognize the importance of culture both at an individual and organizational level and with demonstrated commitment to and success in individual employee and broader organizational development.

  • Partner effectively across organizational lines to achieve goals and objectives; preferably with specific appreciation for the interactions across various sites, engineering disciplines, processes, and roles and responsibilities on complex DoD programs.

  • Coordinate with the broader Advanced Weapons Business Unit, Weapon Systems division, Sector, Company, and industry to identify and leverage existing resources, tools, and practices.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelors degree in engineering, business, or related discipline.

  • 15 years of related experience with tenure in a comparable management position with organizations that have diverse portfolios of programs and products.

  • Experience leading firm fixed price DoD development contracts

  • Ability to manage revenue, profit and cash performance of programs.

  • Disciplined cost management experience gained from working with fixed price contracts.

  • Ability to operate and lead in team environment, and to teach/mentor others to manage in same way.

  • Ability to resolve disputes and negotiate with positive outcome while maintaining good relationships with customers.

  • Strong formal and informal communication skills with all levels of internal and external management.

  • Ability to make good decisions and exercise appropriate judgment that balances customer and Northrop Grumman needs.

  • Ability to plan, follow-up and deliver to commitments.

  • Ability to manage risk to reduce likelihood and severity of program impacts.

  • Active Secret clearance or above

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Active Top Secret clearance

  • MBA

  • 20 years of related experience with tenure in a comparable management position with organizations that have diverse portfolios of programs and products.

  • Proven program management track record over multiple medium- to large-scale systems simultaneously, with the proven ability to deliver the systems on-time and on-budget while maintaining excellent quality and safety standards

  • Management experience in an operation that has a high degree of configuration management and complex product integration.

Salary Range: $251,500 - $377,300
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidates experience, education, skills and current spanet conditions.
Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
