Responsible to supervise the Maintenance Control (MCC) department in their duties as the central point of contact for all technical issues with our aircraft. MCC holds the final Technical Dispatch authority on all WestJet flights to ensure the safe and compliant operation of the fleet. This Manager coordinates with other operational departments to ensure effective communications and oversight throughout all segments of our flights.

Major Duties:

  • Technical Dispatch - responsible to ensure that all WestJet aircraft are maintained to the highest level of safety standards and are clear of any snags, as well as any outstanding maintenance items, before flight
  • IROPs (Irregular Operations) - Manage all IROPs from a technical perspective. Coordinates Tech Ops response to added stress of weather, SPOT, challenges from outside our department that affect aircraft maintenance
  • AOG (Aircraft On Ground) - Responsible to determine the safest and most efficient way of recovering an unserviceable aircraft, bringing it back on line and communicating this with the rest of OCC, Tech Ops and Senior Management
  • SPOT (Safely Performing On Time) - The Manager of MCC is held accountable to track, monitor, report and assist in developing corrective action plans for flight delays and cancellations applicable to Tech Ops
  • Manage the MCC team including scheduling shift coverage (24/7), applicable training (technical, re-current and WestJet mandatory)
  • Career development of a senior group of Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (Controllers)
  • Ensure that daily reports of aircraft status, operational delays, incidents, and cancellations are created and sent to Senior and Executive Management. This is updated on a continuous basis as required 
  • ETOPs (Extended Twin Engine Operations) - Ensure that all ETOPs technical and regulatory requirements are followed and complied with, during all ETOPs flights (this is a regulatory requirement) 
  • Ensures that during an aircraft incident, that WestJet operations continue in an efficient manner. While others focus on the event, MCC handles the rest of the fleet and ensures that they continue to operate in a safe and compliant fashion
  • Works with all other departments within the Operations Control Centre (OCC) to integrate the various specialties into one efficient working group
  • Responsible to ensure that MCC is sufficiently equipped and prepared to operate from the Business Recovery Centre (BRC) if an event occurred where OCC must be evacuated

Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Knowledge and experience of industry regulations and standard practices, including the regulations that are mandated from both an Aircraft Maintenance Organization (AMO) and the Aircraft Operating Certificate (AOC)
  • Different regulations governing the maintenance of the aircraft and the operations of the airline
  • Must be able to take limited information from multiple sources, analyze it and offer suggestions on the best course of action that is safe and has the most efficient outcome for the company, while working under extreme time constraints.

Education and Experience Requirements:

  • Recognized Diploma from a College/Technical School
  • 10+ years of comparable experience - Transport Canada requirement to have a minimum of 6 years of experience in the performance or direct supervision of Maintenance activities of the type undertaken by the organization (at least 6 months of which must be obtained within the last 2 years)
  • Minimum 5 years working in line maintenance
  • Maintenance Control experience an asset
  • Supervisory experience an asset
  • Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer
  • Endorsed on a least one aircraft fleet type operated by WestJet
  • Ability to be on call 24/7 to assist Maintenance Control when significant irregular operations occur
