MISSION:
To construct, maintain, repair, and modify wax molds and fixtures, to participate in the upgrading of production molds; to dimensionally check new and/or modified wax patterns and tooling to assure tooling packages meet specifications; to provide technical assistance to other departments.
PRINCIPAL ACCOUNTABILITIES:
A. Moldmaking and Repair
Objective: to construct, upgrade, modify or repair tooling and fixtures.
Essential Job Functions:
- Identifies causes of tool problems and develops plans to remake, repair or upgrade tooling to increase operational efficiency.
- Checks dimensions of tools and/or patterns using a variety of hand measuring devices, including micrometers, height gauges and dial indicators.
- Lays out tooling projects.
- Sets up and operates all department machine tools including mills, lathes, grinders, rotary tables; monitors and adjusts mechanical processes as required.
- Provides technical assistance in ordering new molds and fixtures.
B. Quality
Objective: to perform work to acceptable design and drawing specifications, and industry standards.
Essential Job Functions:
- Interprets engineering drawings, sketches and documentation for tool designs and concepts.
- Evaluates and modifies designs as required; identifies errors, missing information and inconsistencies; calculates geometric dimensions and tolerances.
- Checks finished work against specifications and standards; modifies when necessary.
C. Cost
Objective: to assure efficient and cost effective operation of all department tools and equipment.
Essential Job Functions:
- Develops accurate quotes of job hours when requested.
- Assures proper care and operations of tools and equipment.
- Identifies areas for improvement in efficiency of methods and designs.
D. Safety
Objective: to take responsibility for and demonstrate safe work practices.
Essential Job Functions
- Adheres to plant and department safety rules.
- Safely operates all equipment and tools, and wears all protective gear as required.
- Replaces or repairs worn or unsafe tools and equipment as needed.
E. Interdepartmental Services
Objective: to provide tooling expertise and resources as requested per schedule.
Essential Job Functions:
- Responds to emergency production requests.
- Provides support to Tool Engineering and Proving as assigned.
- Assists in mold setups and operations; checks wax patterns to tool specifications.
- Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
- Completes logs and records.
- Provides work direction and training to less skilled personnel as assigned.
OTHER (MARGINAL) ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Performs other tasks as directed.

- Dimensional measuring tools (e.g. calipers, micrometers, gauges, etc.)
- Basic hand tools (e.g files, pliers, screwdrivers, etc.)

TRAINING
- Training is provided on the job.
- New Tool Construction Course, Dimensional Rework Course, and Mold Layout Course as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Completion of a structured training or apprenticeship program and at least two years experience as a Journey Moldmaker OR An equivalent combination of structured training and experience.
- Working knowledge of blueprint reading and interpretation
- Ability to perform arithmetic calculations, including algebra, plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
- Ability to use dimensional measuring tools and devices.
- Ability to work independently with limited supervision
- Previous experience in the construction and operation of wax molds is desirable.
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
- Physical ability to perform the essential job functions.
