Job Description:

The position is located within the Department of Transportation (DOT), Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Office of NextGen (ANG). This is a standardized Student Trainee position, which can be used in any ANG organization.

Duties

The position will involve periods of pertinent formal education and periods of employment within the organization. The goal is for the student trainee to become familiar with work in support of Mathematics and Statistics occupations, programs, projects and functions of the assigned organization in the Mathematics and Statistics Group (1500 job series).

The Student Trainee will work in a team setting with professionals from various disciplines such as computer science, engineering, mathematics and statistics, etc.

The student will possess knowledge of basic computer science concepts and communication skills sufficient to assist in ensuring the effective and efficient administrative functions for the organization. The student will communicate information to higher graded employees through reports and notes and will be responsible for activities that are required to support the development of standards and policies necessary to maintain the elements of the FAAs aviation systems. In addition, the student will be required to demonstrate the ability to prepare reports and briefings to communicate information to various audiences.

Performs basic but progressively more difficult assignments under the close direction of a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced professional. Typically acts as a member of a team for projects/programs within a defined area of responsibility. Assists manager and other employees in day-to-day operations.

Applies basic knowledge applicable to his/her discipline and limited experience to accomplish assignments. Typical assignments may include collecting and recording data/information; conducting research; identifying problems; and assisting higher level professionals in day-to-day operations.

Regularly coordinates with a manager and/or other more experienced employee to plan time, prioritize assignments and use assigned resources to accomplish tasks.

Contacts are primarily internal to one organizational unit, with a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee to share basic information and to receive guidance.

Established policies/procedures provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments, with little or no room for discretion. Receives detailed instructions from a manager, project/program manager, team leader or more experienced employee.

Regularly refers problems and work issues to a manager, project/program manager, team leader or more experienced employee for guidance. Work is reviewed regularly during assignments and at completion to ensure timeliness and all aspects of quality.

APPOINTMENT - If selected, your appointment may not exceed a total of 120 days after completing educational requirements. Participation in this program may be terminated at any time.

AGREEMENT: All participants must sign a written Gateways Internship Agreement with their manager that clearly identifies expectations of the appointment such as duties, length of appointment, work schedule, training, mentorship etc.

CONVERSION: Although not guaranteed, an intern may be converted from the Internship Program to a permanent appointment without further competition in accordance with established policy. Conversion must occur within 120 days after successful completion of the educational program (awarding of diploma, certificate, or degree), completion of a minimum of 640 hours of career-related work experience, required training, mentorship, and other requirements in accordance with the intern’s participant agreement. Additionally, the intern must meet qualification requirements and any other position requirements associated with the position to which converted. The intern must be converted to an occupation related to his/her academic training and career-related work experience as outlined in their participant agreement.

Qualifications

FV-B: To qualify for the FV-B, you must be accepted to or currently enrolled in an accredited educational institution (college, university, vocational school, trade school, etc.) leading to a Computer Science degree. Full or half time enrollment is defined by your educational institution.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

Degree Requirement: course of study leading to a Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science.

This occupation has specific educational requirements for entry and applicants must show evidence that their planned academic program will meet those requirements (i.e. transcript reflecting enrollment in applicable programs). Students who graduate without meeting those requirements may not be converted to the target position and could be separated from federal service. Educational Requirements for conversion to the target position are:you must be enrolled in an accredited college or university in a program leading to a bachelor's degree or higher in computer science; OR pursuing a bachelor's degree or higher which includes 30 semester hours in a combination of computer science, mathematics, and statistics. To be acceptable, at least 15 of the 30 semester hours must have included any combination of statistics and mathematics that included differential and integral calculus.

Qualifications must be met by the closing date of the announcement.
