Air Canada serves the most comprehensive global network in Canada flying to 180 destinations, spanning six continents. We are proud to operate the largest widebody passenger fleet by percentage in North America.  Our growth plans include adding 80+ aircraft to our fleet in the next 5 years, including the largest widebody aircraft order in Canada.

To support Air Canada’s comprehensive commercial network, we operate a total of seven fleet types, ranging from the Airbus A-220 to the Boeing B-777. This provides unparalleled opportunity for Air Canada pilots to fly state-of-the-art aircraft to the most attractive global destinations.  

Air Canada provides its pilots with exciting career progression opportunities.  Based on the most recent information, the time to upgrade to a narrowbody Captain is 3-5 years, with an average salary of $215,000 to $290,000 plus expenses. To upgrade to a widebody Captain typically takes 11-15 years, with an average salary of between $315,000 to $350,000 plus expenses. The airline also offers comprehensive benefits, including a pension plan and an Annual Incentive Plan.

Air Canada pilots will be assigned to operate out of one of the four crew bases: Montreal, Toronto, Winnipeg or Vancouver and typically begin their career as a First Officer on domestic aircraft or as a Relief Pilot on long-range, international flights.

Qualifications

To fly for Air Canada, pilots must meet certain basic requirements:   

  • 2000 hours of fixed wing flying time        
  • Ability to pass the Air Canada and Transport Canada medical and visual acuity requirements for a Category 1 medical certificate        
  • Canadian Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL), current Group 1 (Multi-engine) Instrument Rating
  • Canadian passport or landed immigrant status          
  • The ability to hold a Restricted Area Identity Card (RAIC)  
  • Candidates must be eligible to work in Canada, and to travel without restriction throughout the Air Canada network. Any required work permits/visas or other authorizations which may be required is the sole responsibility of the candidates applying for this position.

Pilot applications far exceed job vacancies, so preference is given to candidates with qualifications beyond the basic requirements. Examples of desirable additional qualifications include, but are not limited to:       

  • Graduates of a three- or four-year diploma/degree program from a college or university      
  • Aviation College degree or diploma      
  • Commercial or military flight experience      
  • Jet and/or turbo-prop multi-crew experience
