The position is within the FAA, Aviation Safety (AVS), Office of Aerospace Medicine (AAM), Civil Aerospace Medical Institute, Aerospace Human Factors Research Division (AAM-500). The Office of Aerospace Medicine develops and manages medical programs in support of Aviation Safety.
Duties
The Research Clerk provides the support necessary to principal investigators and management to conduct research. This support includes interacting with customers, scheduling, facilitating events, data entry, clerical task i.e., maintaining files, records, logs, and document preparation under the limited direction of a manager or other experienced employee. The Clerk also assists the manager and other employees by performing routine, multiple, and varying task such as collecting and organizing materials from several sources. Develops charts and tables for reports and briefings to support the program as a team member and may act as a lead for other support staff personnel to coordinate various work assignments.
Applies experience and detailed knowledge of clerical work to plan and accomplish assigned research tasks/assignments for projects, programs, and other work activities. Has a sound understanding of how clerical tasks contribute to organizational activities. Regularly coordinates with a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or other employees to plan time, prioritize tasks, and use assigned resources.
Develops regular updates to the organizational unit to share information and/or discuss the statuses of tasks. On some projects, may have frequent contacts with customers and other parties on routine matters such as greeting and referring callers and visitors. Assist with coordinating visitors access to the center for division business and/or program/project purposes.
Prepares travel orders, including cost estimates for training assignments. Reviews travel vouchers for administrative and procedural compliance, including proper cost accounting codes and statistical accuracy. Initiates or reviews procurement requests for equipment and other items as needed. Ensures justification of requested items meet criteria for expenditures.
Utilizes various programs such as software/hardware to provide clerical support, assists managers and other employees in day-to-day operations, assists with visitors and division tours, communicates with internal/external contacts for various clerical tasks, and works as a team member/player.
Established policies/procedures provide guidance for most tasks but allow some discretion for employee to select the most appropriate approach(es). Works under limited instructions provided by a manager or other experienced employee. May provide recommendations to improve work process. Resolves most problems and work issues without the assistance of a manager or more experienced employee. Informs managers and other employees about problems/issues that require their attention and may assist in developing and recommending solutions. Provides guidance to lower-level support staff employees for handling routine problems and issues.
Work is reviewed periodically, at major stages and at completion, for quality and alignment with the requirements of projects and/or work activities. The work activities of this position support multiple projects/programs and contribute to the objectives of one or more organizational units and the major subdivisions.
