Job Description:

Reach New Heights!

ARCTOS Technology Solutions, LLC (ARCTOS) is a fast-growing, technology-oriented small business providing aerospace, defense, and digital solutions, with offices and work sites across the United States. We’re looking for team-oriented innovators eager to tackle interesting challenges, work on important problems, and receive great benefits and employee support.

REQUIREMENT

ARCTOS is actively seeking a Research Scientist to join our Aerospace Structures and Materials team.

As a member of the team, you will support the development of a cutting-edge modeling and simulation pipeline designed to optimize the microstructure of reactive materials (RM) for use in next-generation DAF systems. The successful candidate will work to integrate existing code, develop new functionalities, and analyze simulation data to establish relationships between RM microstructure, material properties, and energetic performance. This role requires a strong background in materials science, computational modeling, and data analysis, with a focus on microstructural characterization and shock physics.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Gather and consolidate existing scripts and code related to the RM modeling pipeline.
  • Refactor and document existing code for improved readability, modularity, and maintainability.
  • Integrate existing data visualization tools into the pipeline and ensure compatibility with current simulation outputs.
  • Pipeline Validation and Testing:
    • Utilize a pre-defined test matrix of material formulations to validate the revitalized modeling framework.
    • Conduct test simulations and analyze results to demonstrate the interoperability of each component within the pipeline.
  • Enhancement of Microstructure Generation:
    • Generalize the microstructure generation module to accommodate various instantiation methods beyond the current Pymunk library.
    • Demonstrate the interoperability of the generalized module with other pipeline components through test cases.
  • Improvement of Data Insertion Scheme:
    • Develop an improved data insertion scheme to enable on-the-fly generation of new material structures based on easily controllable metrics.
    • Implement user-defined control over parameters such as constituent size distribution and microstructural variables.
  • Integration of Graph-Based Analysis Methods:
    • Collaborate with other researchers to integrate graph-based microstructural analysis methods into the existing pipeline.
    • Develop and implement code to generate and analyze graph representations of RM microstructures
  • Documentation and Knowledge Transfer:
    • Develop comprehensive documentation for the modeling pipeline, including code structure, usage instructions, and remote operation procedures on the High-Performance Computing (HPC) cluster.
    • Conduct training sessions and demonstrations for the project team to ensure a thorough understanding of the pipelines functionality.
  • Data Analysis and Publication:
    • Analyze simulation results from the test matrix and prepare findings for potential publication in a peer-reviewed journal.
  • Exploration of Alternative Microstructure Generation and Analysis Techniques:
    • Research and propose solutions for incorporating experimental microstructural data as input for simulations.
    • Investigate alternative topological analysis methods beyond n-point statistics to enhance the characterization of RM microstructures.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

  • Strong programming skills in Python, including experience with scientific computing libraries (e.g., NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib).
  • Experience with microstructure generation techniques and software (e.g., Pymunk or similar).
  • Familiarity with computational modeling of materials, particularly shock physics and hydrocodes (e.g., CTH).
  • Experience with High-Performance Computing (HPC) environments.
  • Familiarity with version control systems (e.g., Git).
  • Knowledge of microstructural characterization techniques, including n-point statistics and graph theory.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills for effective documentation and knowledge transfer.
  • Experience working in a collaborative research environment.

EDUCATIONAL, CLEARANCE AND CERTIFICATION

  • Masters degree or higher in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Computational Physics, or a related field.
  • U.S. citizenship is required

PHYSICAL/WORKING ENVIRONMENT

  • Primary work environment is a hybrid of a standard office setting and remote.

TRAVEL

  • Anticipated travel to government and client sites in the CONUS up to 10 and will performed will be under the guidelines of Federal Travel Regulations and/or Joint Travel Regulations.

BENEFITS

401(k) Retirement Plan with Company Matching; Health Insurance & HSA; Dental & Vision Insurance; Company Paid Life Insurance, AD&D and Short-Term Disability; Paid Time Off, Volunteer Time Off; Employee Assistance Program

In compliance with pay transparency requirements, the salary range is not a guarantee of compensation or salary, as final offer amount may vary based on factors including but not limited to experience and geographic location.
